What is a Burning Man regional event?

Burning Man only happens once a year, but burner culture is alive and well year-round. Burning Man regional events are held all over the world and are based on the Ten Principles, empowering burner ethos to thrive far and wide. YOUtopia is part of a long tradition of bringing the magic of the playa to the rest of the world while also celebrating the vibrant creative and communal elements of San Diego and the surrounding areas.

This Year's Theme

The founders of a new colony, whatever Utopia of human virtue and happiness they might originally project, have invariably recognized it among their earliest practical necessities to allot a portion of the virgin soil as a cemetery, and another portion as the site of a prison.
Nathaniel Hawthorne

Utopia cannot exist without dystopia. Without the cautionary vision of a dark future, humanity cannot shape and yearn for the idyllic. Furthermore, in humanity’s yearning for utopia we often inadvertently weave the fabric of oppression, hierarchy, and classism. Both utopia and dystopia ride upon the backs of technological advancement as well as mother nature’s reaction to excess. Yet, in the depths arise opportunities for heroes to present themselves and light to shine through.

“YOUtopia vs Dystopia - Spectrum of Reality” is a rumination on binaries, the nature of symmetry, and how opposite forces often drive creation. In an uncertain world, we invite you to teeter on the edge of both utopia and dystopia and explore our uncertain future together. Whether light or dark, it will be a hell (or heaven) of a ride.
