California City is located within a high desert region. The most pleasant months of the year for California City are October, April and May. During the month of October, the temperatures average in the mid-70s during the day and high 40s at night. The area is known for high winds off and on throughout the year. BE PREPARED! Mother Nature has her own agenda and you should BE PREPARED for extreme temperatures and high winds as it’s always possible!
The land upon which the event is held is ecologically diverse. During your stay, you may encounter scorpions, snakes, tarantulas, kangaroo rats, bunnies, coyote, and foxes. Be aware of the land that you’re sharing with the critters and take care to treat any encounters with caution. No matter how hard we try, our presence at this venue will have an impact on the land, so do your best to be a good steward and a good visitor. The area is pretty clear of vegetation, but be careful where you park your vehicle, stay clear of bushes or shrubs (this is how fires can start!). If you encounter bushes or shrubs while building your camp, trim only what is needed to fit your structure and/or consider incorporating them into the footprint of your camp. If you do trim back bushes or shrubs, you may burn the trimmings in an approved burn barrel but DO NOT burn the bush where it grew! If you encounter cholla, steer clear, don’t touch them or you will regret it! It’s a good idea to bring sturdy shovels and rakes in order to get your campsite set up. If you encounter any snakes, DO NOT TOUCH it, keep an eye on it and find someone with a radio to call the Safety team to remove/relocate the snake. Make sure to check your shoes before putting them on as scorpions like those cozy little areas. There will be a good chance that there will be a scorpion party under your tent when you pack up, so make sure to be aware and shush them out of the way with your rake or broom. Do NOT touch them. They’re not poisonous but their sting is mighty! REMEMBER, we’re visitors in their home. Be kind and be aware!
PLEASE NOTE: The Desert Tortoise is located in this area and is protected, so PLEASE do not harm or touch any if you see them. You WILL be ejected from the Event and may actually face a fine! (Please alert a staff member in the rare chance you spot a tortoise).
