This page is a quick introduction to what YOUtopia is, what makes it different from a typical event, how to participate, and what to expect before you arrive. What is YOUtopia?
YOUtopia is San Diego’s annual, official Burning Man regional event celebrating the culture and principles of Burning Man. This year, YOUtopia will take place at the beautiful DeAnza Springs Resort just outside of Jacumba Hot Springs on October -14th – 18th, 2026. This event is created through active participation of the community, and everyone attending. Each year brings new magic, and no YOUtopia is exactly the same: folks build this transient space with their art, creativity, connection, and self-expression.
Is YOUtopia a festival?
No. YOUtopia is a participant-created community experience, which is what sets it apart from festivals. There is no divide between performers and spectators. Everyone contributes in their own way to collectively create the experience. Whether it is a small art project, a large-scale art installation, performances (like theater, music, dance, spoken word), food/drink offerings or other forms of interactivity – we are all a part of the magic that makes YOUtopia.
YOUtopia is also an all-volunteer fundraiser supporting SD CoLab, San Diego’s non-profit, volunteer-run community arts education and creator space. Both the YOUtopia event and the SD CoLab space are made possible by the stewardship of the San Diego Collaborative Arts Project (SDCAP), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
What are the 10 Principles?
YOUtopia is inspired by and based on the 10 Principles of Burning Man’s. To get the full list and descriptions of each principle, check out this LINK.
Do I need to go to Burning Man before I can come to YOUtopia?
Nope. First-timers are welcome. YOUtopia is a great way to experience the culture and principles of the Burning Man community closer to home, and in a smaller space.
Can I just come for the day?
Because YOUtopia is an immersive, multiday event, an important part of getting the full experience and enjoying the adventure is being able to stay onsite. This gives you a chance to connect with amazing folks, express yourself, get inspired and become a part of the temporary community we are building together. Time constraints are a reality of life: if you cannot make it to the entire event, try to join for 2-3 days!
What actually happens at YOUtopia?
The things to experience at YOUtopia are as diverse, eclectic and amazing as all the people participating! As you explore, you will find a lot of original art. You might discover large art installations, some of them sculptures you are invited to climb up and enjoy the view from. You will hear all kinds of music, maybe classical, 90s jams, rock … you could even stop by at a DJ set and dance to some desert trance, hip-hop, or keep the party going late night at a silent disco. Participants offer workshops, stage performances, and share interactive experiences. Grab a bite to eat at a theme camp serving snacks, cool off with a cold beverage offered at a “speakeasy”. And throughout, expect to have conversations and spontaneous adventures with old friends and new. There’s plenty happening that can’t all be put on a schedule.
Is there a main stage or entertainment lineup?
YOUtopia does not have a traditional festival lineup. Much of what happens is created by participants and camps throughout the event. There are theme camps built throughout the space (a map will be shared with all participants) that will provide schedules for events they are creating. Center Camp is a central hub for everyone to hang out, and for community members to share performances or workshops outside the theme camps. Closer to the event, everyone joining YOUtopia will receive a guide that gives a general idea of major events, shows and DJ sets taking place each day. But remember – not all the magic is on the schedule!
Do I have to camp in a tent?
The majority of folks at YOUtopia camp in tents; some bring trailers/RVs. The temporary “village” is mapped out to accommodate both tents and RVs, and when you get your tickets, you will be prompted to include information about what type of shelter you are bringing to the event. What should I bring?
Come prepared to take care of your own basic needs (food, water, shelter, clothing). Bring anything else that will help you contribute to the community in the ways you choose. Reviewing the official survival and packing information before arriving will support your preparations – this information will be provided in the guide sent closer to the event. What if I’m coming alone?
Coming to YOUtopia solo? You will leave with new connections, friends, and wonderful memories! You do not have to arrive with a group, or join a camp. Through participation, volunteering, shared experiences and other ways you choose your own adventures, you will become a part of a supportive, inclusive community.
Is anything for sale inside YOUtopia?
Nothing is bought or sold during the YOUtopia event. This offers us all a chance to embody the Principle of Decommodification – yes, it is nearly impossible for us to achieve true, absolute decommodification. But for these few days, in this space we create, the idea is to remove the focus on transactions or money and to highlight community, gifting without expectation, and being present in the moment.
Can I volunteer?
Absolutely. YOUtopia is entirely volunteer-run, and made possible by volunteers. Volunteering is one of the best ways to meet people, make new friends, and learn about the event and the community. For more details on volunteering, follow this LINK.
If I want to come to YOUtopia, how can I participate? Do I need to bring art, or join a theme camp?
Great question! If this is your first time joining, your active presence, interacting with the art and happenings around YOUtopia are an important part of participation. And, you are invited to contribute in the ways that feel right to you. That might mean making and bringing you art, volunteering, hosting an activity, performing, joining a theme camp, or sharing a skill. You are also welcome to solo camp – you do not have to join a theme camp. YOUtopia is small, intimate and cohesive in ways that allows everyone to visit the entire space and make friends you’ll see again through the duration of the event – many participants camp in the “open camping” areas of the space. You decide what you will create. Whichever ways you choose to show up, your creativity and energy are what make YOUtopia happen. Looking forward to seeing you there!
Can I create an activity, workshop, or other experience?
YES! We are really excited to participate in the experience you are bringing. If you would like to share an experience that requires stage/performance space, or if you are bringing small-scale art that you want to set up in an enclosed space, you could contact a theme camp and see if they might be able to support your art (email?
