Grants & Placement

The Art Grant Committee is excited to fund our community’s artistic endeavors! To increase participation and access to resources, we aim to award only one grant per artist. If you work on multiple projects or collaborate with others, we encourage different team members to lead each project. Once all applications from unique individuals are reviewed, we may consider applications from artists who have already received grants this cycle.

Discover the creativity of YOUtopia’s community of Artists

YOUtopia and the San Diego Collaborative Arts Project nurture a culture of Art and creativity. It is our desire that people feel free to express who they are. Event Art can be as small as a hand puppet to as large as whole sound camps, vehicles, or Art installations. Are you looking for a platform of expression? Let us support your vision with an Art Grant!

Submit an Art Grant Application for projects including Art of all shapes and sizes (both stand-alone or within a Theme Camp), Sound Camps, Art Cars, and Temple proposals. Please read this entire page and any suggested reading before submitting your application(s).

Display Your Art

You’ve made it here and you’re looking for funds to enable your awesome creative endeavors to make it to YOUtopia this October! Large, small, interactive, introspective, silly, soul-stirring–whatever you’re dreaming up, we’re beyond excited to facilitate your creative process with funding to help manifest your vision at YOUtopia this year. We award Art Grants in three rounds at the close of each application window. YOUtopia typically awards grants up to 50% of the total project costs, with some exceptions for larger projects, such as a Temple. Please see the Art Grant FAQ for more information.

Application Deadline TBD

Grants will be awarded at the close of each Art Grant Window. The earlier you apply, the sooner we can support your project!

Still have questions? Read the Art Grant FAQ or contact the art support team at Art@sdyoutopia.com.

The Temple

We are calling out to you, our brilliant community, to conjure our YOUtopia 2026 Temple!

The Temple provides a contemplative space to reflect, grieve, process, and move forward. Participants emerge consoled, able to better inhabit Immediacy, honoring both past experiences and future potentials.

The Temple is also a work of Art that can set the tenor for the whole of the Event. We invite ideas grand or modest, solemn or whimsical.

  • We are unable to burn any Art due to fire hazards. Accordingly, the Art that is not burned must be dismantled by the Artist/Art team and removed from the venue property at the conclusion of the event.
  • YOUtopia in the past has been willing to assist in transportation and volunteer help on site during build/strike, but this is not guaranteed. In your Art Grant Appication, please provide your full plan for the life cycle of the Art piece, including how you plan to transport it.

Theme Camps

If you’re planning to bring your amazing theme camp to YOUtopia this year and you would like to be considered for a grant to make that happen, you’ve landed in the right place!

  • Grant funds must be used for artistic projects in making the Theme Camp awesome and interactive. See Grant Restrictions for things the grant can’t be use for.
  • If you have an Art piece that you would like funded you can apply using the Art Grant Application. The artist completing the piece does not need to be the same person as your theme camp lead.
  • We award Art Grants in two rounds at the close of each application window. Apply early so we can support your project!
  • Application Deadline: TBD
  • Your piece can be placed as a part of a Theme Camp’s interactive gifts to the event, or placed separately. Either way, you must fill out a separate Art Placement Request. If it is within a camp, please include it in the camp’s layout with your Theme Camp Placement Request. The Theme Camp/Sound Camp Placement Request Deadline TBD.

Still have questions? Read the Art Grant FAQ or email us at themecamps@sdyoutopia.com, or art@sdyoutopia.com.

Sound Camps

Do you have a dope set-up and solid DJs? We can help get you to YOUtopia.

  • Please read the Sound Policy.
  • See Grant Restrictions for things the grant can’t be use for.
  • Camps providing a solid sound setup and a diverse selection of music are eligible to apply through the Art Grant Application.   We award Art Grants in three rounds at the close of each application window. There will be a limited number of grant awards for sound camps, so we urge you to apply as soon as possible.
    Application Deadline: TBD
  • Whether or not you apply for an Art Grant to support your Sound Camp, you must apply for Placement. Placement in our temporary city will be determined by your size, anticipated sound levels, and proximity to other camps. Help our city planning efforts succeed by filling out your Theme Camp/Sound Camp Placement Request. The Theme Camp/Sound Camp Placement Application TBD

Still have questions? Read the Art Grant FAQ or email us at themecamps@sdyoutopia.com, or Art@sdyoutopia.com.

  • Round 2 Application Deadline: July 27th, 2025 at 11:59pm..

The earlier you apply, the sooner we can support your project!

BUDGET!

Research all your costs and break it down per item. Take your time and think through every aspect of the projected expenses.

Check out the Grant Budget Template to see how it’s done.

You can also email art@sdyoutopia.com.

As a general guideline, we rarely provide a grant for more than 50% of the total cost of the project. This year, due to budget constraints, grants will likely be no more than $599 per person awarded, with possible exceptions for larger-scale projects like Sound Camps and the Temple.

Finish and install your project at the event! You have until noon Thursday to be up and running. A member of the Art Curation team will inspect your project to check it off for completion.

Projects that are unfinished by the deadline face possible request for return of granted funds.

If you have issues completing your project contact us ahead of time for assistance at art@sdyoutopia.com

In general, food, drink, and wages paid to artists are NOT permitted in any funding request.

Additionally, if you are a Sound or Theme Camp, we will not fund the purchase of sound equipment.

Read more at Grant Restrictions.

NO HIGH POWERED LASERS without advance approval because they are potentially dangerous. Please read our  Laser Policy.

Mounted lasers are only permitted on Art Pieces or in Theme Camps if they comply with specific restrictions and have PRIOR approval.

If you are planning to include lasers in your project, you will need to email the Safety Team to get approval:  safety@sdyoutopia.com

We plan to have a limited amount of reduced-priced tickets available for Lead Artists. You can make the request through our Art Grant Application. Please note that the funding for Artist tickets comes from the same budget as our Art Grants; this means that the discounts given for tickets impacts the amount of money available for grants.

In-camp parking passes and/or RV passes are required to keep vehicles in camp. Exceptions may be made for vehicles that are necessary to support a project; prior approval will be required.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL approved RV’s and large trailers MUST be placed behind frontage areas and/or tucked away as out of sight as is possible. They will not be allowed to be a part of a camp’s frontage unless they are specifically needed for that frontage.

NO VEHICLE/RV PASSES WILL BE SOLD AT THE GATE.

We award Art Grants in two rounds. Notifications regarding grant awards will be sent within one week following the Art Grant Committee meeting.

After that, please promptly email back the couple of completed forms we send you. You should then receive your check within one to two weeks. The sooner we get your forms, the sooner you’ll get your check

Email Art@sdyoutopia.com if you have any further questions about the grant process.
